NBA Draft: What will Lakers do with No. 2 pick?

first_imgThis scenario becomes complicated because of the strings attached to any potential deal. As much as the Lakers want to add talented veterans to their roster, they do not want to significantly compromise their young core both because of its potential talent and longevity. Besides, the Lakers can also add veteran talent by having as much as $60 million in cap space in free agency. 4. >> The Lakers draft another prospect. Few might believe the Lakers would consider drafting anyone else besides Simmons or Ingram. Then again, many assumed the Lakers use their second pick last year on either big man Minnesota passed, either Karl-Anthony Towns or Jahlil Okafor. After the Timberwolves drafted Towns, the Lakers chose Russell instead. The Lakers could still satisfy their frontcourt deficiencies in other ways, which Kupchak said marked the team’s top priority. At the NBA pre-draft combine, the Lakers interviewed another wing player (Cal’s Jaylen Brown), a stretch forward (Marquette’s Henry Ellenson) and a big man (Utah’s Jakob Poeltl). The next stepThe Lakers will maintain an open mind in case more developments emerge in interviews and workouts. Barring any undisclosed injuries or discovered character flaws, Ingram seems the most likely fit. Simmons likely will not be available anyway. But Ingram’s presence satisfies the Lakers’ hope both to add potential star talent and satisfy short-term needs without as many question marks. Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error The anxiety finally melted away. The Lakers no longer have to worry if they will have to trade their lottery pick to the Philadelphia 76ers. For the second consecutive year, the Lakers both landed at No. 2 and delayed experiencing another consequence of the ill-fated Steve Nash deal.As much as the Lakers currently feel relief, though, they also field another pressing question. What will they do with the pick? Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak has plenty of time to decide before the NBA draft on June 23. So, Kupchak sounded skeptical draft workouts would begin soon. He also maintained he has not favored any possible scenarios. Below, however, represents a sneak peek of what might happen.center_img 1. >> The Lakers draft Duke forward Brandon Ingram. This scenario seems most plausible partly because Philadelphia is expected to select LSU forward Ben Simmons at No. 1. Even if the Lakers could choose between the two, however, various NBA talent evaluators argued Ingram would better help their needs. Ingram would bolster both the Lakers’ deficiencies both in 3-point shooting and on defense. Even if he lacks strength at 190 pounds, Ingram appears a better wing option than an inconsistent Nick Young or an undeveloped Anthony Brown. 2. >> The Lakers draft Simmons. If the Sixers change their mind and fall in love with Ingram, there’s certainly nothing wrong with this contingency plan. Simmons has sparked comparisons to LeBron James and Lamar Odom for his versatility and pass-first mentality. Yet, questions have emerged surrounding his work ethic and his outside shot. For all the struggles D’Angelo Russell, Julius Randle and Jordan Clarkson experienced sharing ball-handling duties last season, those challenges could become more pronounced with another player who rarely excels as much playing off-the-ball. 3. >> The Lakers trade the pick. Kupchak will always takes calls and explore scenarios to expedite the rebuilding process. So, it appears likely the Lakers would at least have discussions with the Sacramento Kings (DeMarcus Cousins) and Indiana Pacers (Paul George).last_img read more

Sourav Ganguly: MS Dhoni has communicated decision on future with captain, selectors

Powered by Firework BCCI president Sourav Ganguly believes MS Dhoni has already communicated about his future plans with skipper Virat Kohli. One of India’s most finest captains ever, Dhoni, has reached the twilight of his decorated career. But after representing his beloved country for 15 consecutive years, ‘Captain Cool’ decided to take an indefinite sabbatical from cricket after the Cricket World Cup this year. As usual rumours and speculations about his retirement skyrocketed since he also refused to return; but president Ganguly is sure that Dhoni has already spoken with Kohli on his plans.Advertisement Picture Credit: Cricket Country“He’s (MS Dhoni) had communication with the captain, I am sure he has had communication with the selectors, and I don’t think this is the platform to discuss about it,” Ganguly said in an event. However, ever since his age caught up with him, critics have strongly disapproved Dhoni’s performance even before the Cricket World Cup in England this summer. The wicketkeeper came under heavy criticism for his poor strike rate and that he wasn’t contributing enough with the bat. But according to BCCI, experience matters the most and therefore Virat Kohli took the opportunity to extend Dhoni’s mentorship for a while.Advertisement Even the board president reckons that it will take years to find someone of Dhoni’s calibre. In his words, “You won’t get another MS Dhoni very, very soon, but what he does — whether he wants to play, whether he doesn’t want to play, is up to him.”The 38-year-old, took the throne in 2007 and cemented his place as India’s new leader, winning the inaugural World T20 in South Africa that year. That victory and his composure instilled a faith in the team which would enjoy a sensational four years of international success, ultimately lifting the ODI World Cup at home four years later.Advertisement Read Also:Game Of Boards: Is a Super Series between the top 4 cricketing nations a good idea?Top 5 Best Cricket Catches in 2019  Advertisementlast_img read more
