Softball wins in its home opener

Bridgette Pagano threw her third shutout of the season to help the Long Beach State softball team pick up a 7-0 over Canisius College (4-5) in the Long Beach Invitational tournament. L.B. State jumped out to an early lead scoring three times in the first inning after showing discipline at the plate picking up four walks and a single by Whitney Radcliff. The 49ers struck gold again when they scored a pair of fifth inning runs when Beaver and Panita Thanatharn scored on LeSage’s triple. They will resume play today when they face Utah at 1 p.m. and then UCLA at 6 p.m. Track and FieldDistance runner Jimmy Grabow became the first All-American male distance runner in school history after he finished in 11th in the 5000-meter indoor finishing with a time of 13:59.45. Grabow a two-time all conference selection, finishes his career holding four school records three of them being individual records. Pagano struck out five while allowing only three hits for the 49ers (7-13) who were playing their first game in Long Beach this season.
