Microsoft is reportedly building its own “Xbox Surface” gaming tablet, which could give the company a true mobile gaming strategy.Microsoft officials declined to comment, but the rumored 7-inch tablet could incorporate a custom ARM processor as well as “high-bandwidth RAM suitable for gaming tasks,” The Verge reported on Tuesday. In June, the site published what it believed to be the specs of the device, which included 288MB of RLDRAM 2 and a screen resolution of 1280 x 720.Microsoft is also reportedly considering a Surface phone, according to the rival BGR site. If the reports are true, an “Xbox Surface” tablet would give Microsoft something of a head-to-head competitor to the Sony PlayStation Vita and the Nintendo 3DS. Technically, Microsoft already has a mobile gaming platfrom: Windows Phone, which is moving into Windows Phone 8. Games like Dragon’s Blade and Dungeon Stalker take advantage of Windows Phone 7 (and 8), providing the platform with entertainment for Windows Phone users to enjoy on the subway or an airplane. But the quality of the games pales to what Microsoft’s game console, the Xbox 360, offers; gaming sites like PocketGamer usually give short shrift to Microsoft’s phone games. Mobile Gaming On The RiseStatistically, the rise of mobile gaming clearly justifies a Microsoft foray into the market. In September, analyst group NPD (which provides reports ranking the various game consoles and games by unit sales) said that the number of “mobile gamers” climbed 9% from a year ago, to a total of 23% of the 211.5 million U.S. gamers, or a total of 46.53 million mobile gamers. Since the number of total gamers actually decreased 5%, that means that mobile gamers are growing both in absolute numbers as well as a percentage of the whole. What NPD doesn’t do – publicly, at least – is break out the numbers for each console. However, a recent report from the Associated Press does a nice snapshot of how console makers are faring. Microsoft, for example, says it shipped 1.7 million Xbox 360 consoles during the latest quarter, down 26% from 2.3 million a year earlier. Sony shipped a total of 3.5 million PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 units for the quarter, down from 4.9 million a year ago. And Nintendo said it sold 1.32 million Wiis for the six-month period ending in September, down from 3.35 million a year ago.The mobile market is a bit more vague. Nintendo didn’t break out its portable shipments, and Sony said it sold 1.6 million portable PlayStation units (possibly including the Vita) versus 1.7 million units a year ago. That probably means that there’s a market opportunity for Microsoft, if it chooses to head down that path. What Games Would An Xbox Surface Run?But there’s a simple question that hasn’t yet been answered: Would an Xbox Surface tablet actually run Xbox games?Currently, the Xbox 360 is powered by the so-called Xenon chip, a triple-core IBM PowerPC chip. That’s an entirely different architecture than the ARM processor found within the Apple iPhone5 or all Android phones. And that, in turn, means that games written for a custom ARM processor in an Xbox Surface tablet would require a custom port to the tablet by the developer itself. It also means, however, that Windows Phone games should work without too much trouble. Designing a tablet around a custom Intel chip seems to make more sense, as it would likely provide the X86 compatibility needed to run true Windows apps, which have already begun straddling the Xbox console and PC anyway. An ARM-powered Xbox Surface tablet might resemble the Surface RT: a low-cost, specialized platform that would require custom apps. That doesn’t mean those apps wouldn’t be written, but it would require additional development effort (and most likely financial incentives from Microsoft) to start building an app ecosystem for the Xbox Surface. And would PC-quality games run well on a tablet? Doubtful.Other PossibilitiesThere are a couple of other possibilities: Sony recently bought Gaikai, a cloud-gaming company that is being assimilated into the PlayStation space. Microsoft has already announced that its latest Halo 4 offering is being powered by its Azure cloud software; it’s not too far-fetched to think that Microsoft could be planning some form of streamed offering, either using the Xbox 360 console for local processing or going all the way back to its own in-house servers. Either way, that would help Microsoft circumvent the limits of an Xbox Surgace tablet. This could also simply be a blown-up marketing effort. Both Sony and Microsoft have released “custom” Xbox hardware tied to a specific game; it’s possible that this could simply be an “Xbox” branded Surface tablet with the SmartGlass “second screen” app front and center.A Microsoft bet on mobile gaming is certainly risky. But as tablets usurp PCs, an Xbox Surface could also be seen as ahead of the curve. In practice, however, it’s pretty obvious that the company is barely showing up to the fight for consumers. Compare that to Samsungs Galaxy S III blitz or Nokia’s PureView ad campaign. Sharp doesn’t even play to its strengths very well. For all the buzz it generates with announcements like the world’s biggest LED TV, Sharp has been incredibly unsuccessful branding Aquos televisions as a viable alternative to Samsung and Sony, and its oddly Sim City-esque LCD monitor microsite shows a complete lack of understanding of how to sell products – even without the typos (copyedit on “exsamples,” please). The PrognosisSharp’s own leaders have acknowledged that it can’t survive on its own. The most probable course of action is acquisition of its manufacturing assets, either through investment (like a proposed deepening of ties with Foxconn, the industry’s favorite sweat shop) or a post-bankruptcy sell-off. In either case, expect to see a reduction in consumer brands produced by the company. Can This Company Be Saved?Given its similar ties to Apple and previous investments in Sharp, Foxconn will probably play a role in Sharp’s future. The coupling could work. Foxconn’s financial backing and massive labor machine, combined with Sharp’s precision display expertise could create a high-quality, moderately priced television that could be perfect for a high-end consumer brand looking to make a big splash. Massive Non-Desk Workforce is an Opportunity fo… Tags:#Deathwatch#Electronics Manufacture#mobile#television IT + Project Management: A Love Affair After 100 years of innovation, Sharp is the worst-performing company in the world. In the end, its lack of consumer focus sealed the deal. The Basics100 years ago, a metalworker and inventor named Tokuji Hayakawa opened his first shop in Tokyo. On the backs of his “Tokubijo” snap belt buckle and “Hayakawa” mechanical pencil (also called the “Ever Ready Sharp”), he built an industrial empire that produced Japan’s first crystal radio, the world’s first mass-produced microwave oven, the first LCD calculator and some of the earliest solar panels. The company’s stock price peaked in 2000-2001, when the company released the first camera-equipped mobile phone and the groundbreaking AQUOS LCD televisions.Like most consumer electronics companies, Sharp took a hit in late 2001, but it didn’t recover as well as its competitors did. As market power shifted away from its strengths, Sharp began to suffer, despite maintaining technical leadership in LCD display technology. Sharp is currently the worst performing stock in the world, its credit rating has been cut to “junk” status, and its leadership has cast “material doubt” on its ability to survive. All options are on the table, and more than 60,000 jobs are at risk. The ProblemHow did things get so bad? A sluggish economy certainly played a role, and the emergence of Samsung didn’t help, but in the end, it was Sharp’s own lack of vision that drove the company into irrelevance. To be fair, the Japanese economy is struggling, and electronics companies are bearing the worst of it. Panasonic, the revenue leader in Japanese electronics, has lost $16.79 billion in the past 12 months, and on November 11, Moody’s cut Sony’s credit rating to one step above “junk” status. A reasonably strong yen hurts exports, the television market is glutted, and Japan’s domestic economy began shrinking for the first time in a year. A weak global recovery, troubles at home, and an emergent Samsung have hurt the entire Japanese electronics sector, but Sharp is bleeding nearly three times as fast as Sony (also on the ReadWrite DeathWatch list), as a percentage of total revenue, and its prospects are far more dire. The reason is more than just poor execution. It’s a lack of corporate identity.Sharp has all but given up on its consumer brand and accepted a role as a manufacturer of commodity parts. By all accounts, Sharp makes fantastic screens – that’s why Apple sources iPhone displays from the company. But in an industry as fickle as consumer electronics, being a supplier means losing control of your own destiny. As you move down the supply chain, margins become slimmer and the ability to control your own destiny shrinks. As Samsung has shown, the only path to long-term success as a widget manufacturer is to sell them in your own products. Cognitive Automation is the Immediate Future of…

zoom The Hanjin Marine is the first Hanjin ship to call at one of the Northwest Seaport Alliance’s (NWSA) terminals, after the South Korean shipping company filed for receivership in late August. The Hanjin Marine was expected to call at Terminal 18 in Seattle on August 25. The vessel was scheduled to call Terminal 46, however, this was changed due to space issues.Terminal 18 said it will not charge for import pickups and will not accept empty containers. On September 22, 2016, the Hanjin Marine was anchored off Vancouver Island and the second ship, the Hanjin Scarlet was also at anchor outside of Prince Rupert. According to NWSA, it was unclear whether either ship will call Seattle. The Hanjin Scarlet was anchored directly upon arrival at Prince Rupert on August 30, in the wake of reports that Hanjin Shipping had applied for court protection from its creditors. The ship finished unloading cargo at the port on September 9 and has been anchored since then outside the port.NWSA Olympic Container Terminal (OCT) in Tacoma is still not accepting or dispatching any empty Hanjin containers. In addition, Husky Terminal in Tacoma is neither receiving nor releasing any empty Hanjin containers.According to terminal operator Total Terminals International (TTI), Hanjin gate transactions at Terminal 46 are performed for import delivery only.Last week, it was reported that cash held by Hanjin, coupled with commitments from the company’s leading shareholder, the leading creditor and the parent group’s CEO, should be enough to cover the costs of unloading cargo from the company’s boxships stranded offshore.
Redshirt-senior quarterback Kenny Guiton (13) dances with his teammates after a game against Purdue Nov. 2 at Ross-Ade Stadium. OSU won, 56-0.Credit: Shelby Lum / Photo editorFor a moment, the fans in Ohio Stadium held their breath.Then-sophomore quarterback Braxton Miller was on his way to the hospital and OSU’s undefeated season laid in the hands of then-redshirt-junior Kenny Guiton.Guiton led the Buckeyes on a game tying touchdown drive with 3 seconds left in regulation, and to an eventual 29-22 overtime win against Purdue Oct. 20, 2012.It was a moment that stands out in his five-year OSU career, Guiton said Monday, because of what it meant to the team.“No. 1, that Purdue game last year. Just coming in and (saving) a 12-0 season. You know, I don’t think that I did it on my own or anything, but just keeping that 12-0 alive and I think that was big for our seniors,” Guiton said. “Being that it was my first piece of some real action so that was pretty cool to do.”This season, Guiton has turned into somewhat of a celebrity at OSU. His entrance into the game invites chants of “Kenny G” from the Ohio Stadium crowd.Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against Indiana (4-6, 2-4) is set to be Guiton’s final game in the Horseshoe as a Buckeye. Although he enjoys hearing his name screamed by the fans, Guiton said Saturday is going to be special for his family.“I hear that a lot,” Guiton said about hearing the chants. “One thing I’m happy about, my family coming up and getting to see that. I came all the way out here from Texas and (my) family don’t get to make (it up) much so them being here and seeing that, that will be so cool. I can’t wait for that.”But Guiton said despite the highs, Senior Day is going to be very emotional for all of those involved.“I actually thought about it a lot. I’ve been talking to a lot of guys about it … and we’re just like man, we can’t talk about that. We kind of get sentimental behind it. It’s going to be a touchy day … some tears may come out but I’m hoping not.”Miller went down with an sprained MCL earlier this season, this time missing two whole games and the majority of a third. “Kenny G” came in and impressed in Miller’s absence, throwing for a program record six touchdowns against Florida A&M Sept. 21.Coach Urban Meyer said Sept. 16, the Monday after Guiton’s first career start against California, he had been impressed with the play of his backup quarterback.“It’s arguably one of the most interesting case studies I’ve ever had as a coach is the story of Kenny Guiton … can you imagine being his parent right now, how cool that would be to see his development?” Meyer said. “If you buy stock, buy stock in Kenny Guiton.”Guiton said although the moment against Purdue will always stand out, this year has been something special as well.“I can’t settle down on this year either because it’s like, I never saw myself being the national player of the week,” Guiton said.Guiton was named the national player of the week after a 52-34 win against California, when he threw for 276 yards and four touchdowns.Despite Guiton’s big numbers at times this season, and popularity among the fans, Miller remains the starter for OSU, a fact that doesn’t bother Guiton.“Braxton deserves that credit,” Guiton said. “He puts in all the work, he’s a leader. He keeps his head up when stuff’s not going right. He’s keeping the team’s head up.”Miller said Nov. 13 after practice that his relationship with Guiton has been a big help to his growth as a player while he’s been at OSU.“I look up to him as a big brother, I’ve talked to him ever since I was being recruited,” Miller said.Meyer agreed, adding that Guiton has been a big help in Braxton’s improvement since his freshman season.“Now they’re both operating at a very high level,” Meyer said Nov. 13. “They’ve practice very hard, they prepare very hard, much different than a year ago, so I think Kenny had a lot to do with it and it’s a direct results of the way he prepares, the way he practices.”Guiton said Meyer treats the players and staff like a family.“One thing about coach Meyer is he’s straightforward. He’s going to tell you what he’s feeling. He’ll let you know what type of player you are and what he’s expecting out of you,” Guiton said. “I think that’s great … Everything’s said and we’re a family. He actually treats us like a family. And I think it’s really cool.”After the No. 3-ranked Buckeyes’ (10-0, 6-0) game against the Hoosiers, Guiton will not be returning to Ohio Stadium as a player for OSU. But that doesn’t rule out a potential future in Columbus for Guiton.“I have told the coaches that I want to do the coaching thing,” Guiton said. “So I hope so.”
