Will do whatever I can to help Unmukt, says St Stephen’s College Principal

first_imgSoftening his stand, St Stephen’s College Principal Valsan Thampu on Thursday said India’s Under-19 World Cup winning skipper Unmukt Chand will be taken care of.Unmukt was denied promotion to the second year of his Bachelor of Arts course by St Stephen’s as the young cricketer failed to accumulate the minimum attendance required by college. Speaking exclusively to Headlines Today, Thampu said Unmukt will be given a rousing reception at the college. “I will do whatever I can to help Unmukt,” he said. Vice-president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Union Minister, Rajiv Shukla, had earlier said it was an internal matter of the college. He had appealed to St Stephen’s authorities to consider Unmukt as a special case. “I appeal to St Stephen’s to take a considerate view on Unmukt. But I understand that it is an internal matter. The college is autonomous. But I am making this appeal,” Shukla said.last_img read more

Photographers lens shatters stereotypes around Muslim women

first_img Facebook Twitter Photographer Alia Youssef is challenging the way many Canadians picture Muslim women.Even as a young girl, Youssef — now 23 — says she struggled with the way she was perceived as a Muslim growing up in Canada.Youssef’s family immigrated from Egypt when she was eight years old, settling down in suburban Vancouver where she says she quickly learned to hide the fact that she was Muslim. She grew up feeling ashamed of her identity, background and her religion, she says, all because of the connotations that came with being a Muslim woman.Youssef went, “from being so proud and excited to talk about my religion and my faith as I did when I was in Egypt, to closing down and being more reserved about what I was sharing with people — because some of the comments I got right away after moving made me feel like my background was not OK to share, because I was automatically being judged. So that left me growing up feeling like that was something that I needed to hide about myself.”READ MORE LEAVE A REPLY Cancel replyLog in to leave a comment Advertisementcenter_img Advertisement Aalya, a Canadian Muslim woman photographed by Alia Youssef for The Sisters Project. In late 2017, director and actor Kevin Smith and actor Jason Mewes — better known as their stoner movie characters Jay and Silent Bob — entered into a brand licensing agreement with Hamilton, Ont.-based cannabis company Beleave Inc. to develop strains. And in 2016, rapper Snoop Dogg struck a deal with Canopy to grant the licensed producer the exclusive right to use certain content and brands such as Leafs By Snoop. However, since Canada legalized recreational cannabis last October, these companies are subject to strict rules governing promotion of the products. Iconic ‘sandesh’ gets a facelift in election season

first_imgKolkata: The “sandesh” has been dressed up. It is on a catwalk either as the Trinamool’s “jora ghash phul” (twin-flower), BJP’s lotus, Congress hand symbol or the hammer and sickle of the CPI-M. These “election sweets” are just flying off the shelves at Balaram Mullick and Radharaman Mullick, one of the oldest confectioners in the city, or Shibani Sweets at Sodepur in the northern suburb. With the humble “nakuldana” (flour-sugar balls) and “laddoo” taking the centre stage ahead of the Lok Sabha polls in rural Bengal, the confectioners in Kolkata are not leaving any opportunity to bank on the frenzied ambience. Also Read – Bengal family worships Muslim girl as Goddess Durga in Kumari Puja”Sandesh” (cottage cheese sweet) is readily coming up in any form you wish. They have been flying off the shelves since the election drums were rolled. “We have been making these sweets during elections for many years. This year too the response is very good,” Poppy Mullick of Balaram Mullick and Radharaman Mullick said. Asked which party-themed sweet was selling the most, she jokingly said “no comments”. Regarding the bulk orders placed by the party workers, Mullick gave a hint that “the ruling Trinamool Congress topped the chart.” They have priced a sweet of 250 gm at Rs 150. Also Read – Bengal civic volunteer dies in road mishap on national highwayThe Sodepur sweet shop, which specialises in theme-based sweets during football and cricket World Cups, is offering decorative trays filled with huge sweets replicated as party symbols. Trinamool’s twin-flower, BJP’s lotus, the hand symbol of Congress or the hammer and sickle of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) — they have all been given a sweet twist. “We are offering the big trays for Rs 800-2,000 each while a small sandesh is priced at Rs 70,” said Sanjib Das, a staff at Shibani Sweets. Das is elated as this year the shop is getting “huge response”. He mentioned that the customers are so impressed that they are asking for larger sizes. “The ‘Trinamool sandesh’ is in great demand. Sweets of other parties like the BJP, Congress and the CPI(M) are selling too,” Das said. Orders can also be customised as per the customers’ demand. The shops also ensure that the customers get fresh sweets, so after placing the order, one has to wait for a little time. Almost 14-15 men are toiling hard to churn out these sweet delicacies laced with aesthetic appeal at Shibani Sweets. “This is just the beginning, I am sure that as the election heat picks up, the demand will keep soaring. We will try our best to deliver,” Das said. While Mullicks will stick to sweets with party symbols, Shibani Sweets will try to come up with sweets replicating leaders’ faces if demanded. Amidst the high voltage campaigns, these sweets will add a dash of goodness and will be savoured by the supporters and the members of the winning party and candidates, the shop said. Trinamool Congress’ Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal’s directive to party workers to hand over “nakuldana” and water to people to keep them cool and the BJP’s decision to distribute “laddoos” among the people as a counter move has added to the sweetness of the electoral contest in the state. The seven-phase Lok Sabha elections in the state will be held between April 11 and May 19. Votes will be counted on May 23.last_img read more

Asked if he would take a decision based on the outcome of bypolls to 18 assembly segments held on Thursday along with 38 Lok Sabha seats, Rajinikanth said he will respond after the results are out. To a question if the results may lead to assembly polls in the state and whether he would then face them, the actor shot back, “Ready to face, whenever they are held.” The bypolls to four other seats will be held on May 19.last_img read more

There Are No Great NFL Teams This Year

Atlanta is the mirror-image Vikings: Whereas Minnesota ranks first in defensive EPA and 28th in offensive EPA, the Falcons are first in offensive EPA and 28th in defensive EPA. But the Falcons are trending in the wrong direction, making it fair to question them. Atlanta began last year 5-0 yet managed to finish 8-8, and after starting this year 4-1, Neil Paine asked if the Falcons were going to screw it up again. Since then, Atlanta is 0-2.Perhaps if Tom Brady had never been suspended, the 2016 season would be thought of as a year highlighted (again) by a dominant Patriots team. But through seven weeks, there are no longer any undefeated teams, and no teams that looked great on both sides of the ball. Parity may be a selling point for the league, but that doesn’t make it pretty. If you take the average of each team’s offensive and defensive EPA as a rough measure of aggregate strength, the highest-ranked team in 2016 is the Eagles at 28.0. However, of the 353 teams from ’06 to ’16 through seven weeks, that ranks as just the 33rd-best score. In other words, over the previous 10 years, there was an average of 3.2 teams per season that fared better than 2016’s top team. On the other hand, there are no truly dreadful teams, either. The Browns have the worst average EPA this year (-35.0), among teams that have negative grades on both offense and defense. Over the same span, there was an average of 2.5 teams worse than this season’s worst squad.Eight teams form this season’s vanguard2What we refer to as Pareto Efficient, from the Vikings in the upper left on down to the Falcons in the lower right. That means that despite differences in how their strengths are distributed between offense and defense, there is no team in the league that has more EPA on offense than any of these teams and also has more EPA on defense than that same team. And the fact that there are eight of those teams is a good sign that there are no dominant teams this year. Each of these teams has its flaws, and many are similarly constructed, with solid defenses and sputtering offenses:Minnesota boasts the top defense in the NFL, but an offense that is far below average. The Vikings rank dead last in yards per carry, and prior to this season Sam Bradford had been one of the worst starting quarterbacks in the NFL. And while Bradford had played well this year, he finished with the lowest QBR of any passer in week seven. Given the significant concerns on the offensive line, this figures to be a problem all season for the Vikings. The opening week of this NFL season featured a record number of close games that provided more than a hint of things to come. Because after Minnesota’s loss on Sunday to Philadelphia, there are no remaining undefeated teams. For reference, this time last year, there were five undefeated teams.Sharon Katz at ESPN Analytics wrote Monday that every NFL team is flawed. Using Expected Points Added1As Katz wrote, EPA accounts for the context of every play and how each play contributes to the unit’s ultimate goal of scoring (on offense) or limiting opponents’ points (on defense). Read more about EPA here. as her preferred measure of offensive and defensive efficiency, she showed that no team is excelling on both sides of the ball this season. How does that fit into the league’s recent history? ESPN’s EPA data goes back to 2006, and the chart below shows the EPA for each team in each season since then. The top teams would be expected to occupy the far upper-right portion of the upper-right quadrant — those teams would have the most EPA on both offense and defense. But this year, no team is occupying that upper corner. New England? Well, no argument here. Expect the Patriots to be on top of just about every set of power rankings this week, including ours. Denver, like the Vikings and Eagles, is trying to ride a strong defense to a Super Bowl title. Unlike those teams, the Broncos have some precedent for it: the 2015 season. Denver remains a Super Bowl contender, but the team is hardly balanced. In fact, the Broncos are averaging just 5.2 yards per play this year, down from 5.4 on last year’s hard-to-watch offense. Dallas, like Philadelphia, is a surprise behind a rookie quarterback. And while the Cowboys rank seventh in points allowed per game, the defense is below average, as its EPA rating indicates. Dallas leads the NFL in time of possession, which helps keep the raw numbers down, and the Cowboys defense ranks fourth in percentage of drives ending in turnovers, which is unlikely to continue. More worrisome? Dallas ranks 29th in third-down defense and is below-average against the pass. Arizona has a similar statistical profile to the Eagles, but the Cardinals are 3-3-1 against a schedule that has been below average. And while the Cardinals were a top team last year, it’s hard to be impressed by a team that has lost to the Patriots without Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski, the 3-4 Rams and the 4-3 Bills. Buffalo is another team that is hard to take seriously as a contender: The Bills are 4-3, with losses to the 3-4 Ravens, 3-4 Dolphins, and 2-5 Jets. The team will live and die with its rushing game: Buffalo has averaged 73 rushing yards in its three losses, and 212 in its four wins. Philadelphia presents a similar story: The defense looks great, but how far can the team go with a rookie quarterback and rookie head coach? Like the Vikings, Philadelphia also lacks a top-notch playmaker on offense to carry the team. Jordan Matthews is the team leader in yards from scrimmage, but leaguewide he ranks just 75th in that metric this year. Darren Sproles, at age 33, is second on the team and 77th overall. read more

Indian markets slip in morning trade amid selling by investors funds

first_imgIndian equities opened Monday’s trade on a weak note with major indices trading with about quarter of a percent of losses. Lack of strong global and domestic cues was attributed as the reasons behind such a lacklustre trade. While the 30-share index Sensex was trading 0.27 percent lower at 26,417.61, the 50-share index Nifty was at 8,120.95, down 0.23 percent in the early morning trade. Overall market breadth was negative with 749 advances and 873 declines. Most sectoral indices were trading in the red with auto, banking, capital goods, FMCG and IT stocks dragging the indices. However, metals and oil and gas stocks were providing some support to the market, capping the overall fall.Asian Paints was the major loser in the morning trade with its shares falling 1.20 percent to trade at Rs 889.10. Eicher Motors, Sun Pharma, Adani Ports and Bharti Airtel also saw selling pressure in the early morning trade.Meanwhile, Aurobindo Pharma gained the most on Monday with its shares trading 2.58 percent higher at Rs 708.50. GAIL, Tata Power, BPCL and Idea Cellular were the other major gainers on Monday. On the global front, Asian markets were trading with marginal losses with Japan’s Nikkei, China’s Shanghai Composite and South Korea’s Kospi in the red. Importantly, US stocks fell on Friday, driven by nearly 4 percent drop in Oracle shares. Analysts said that the fall in global indices weighed on investors’ sentiments in the domestic market. On the domestic front, the tepid performance of market was attributed to lack of active participation by investors. Last fortnight of December generally sees a thin trading volume with a dip in foreign institutional investor (FII) participation due to the Christmas holidays. The Indian rupee was trading 0.01 percent lower at 67.75 against the dollar on Monday. IT detected Rs 19000 crore black money in ICIJ HSBC cases Jaitley

first_imgCreative CommonsThe Income Tax department has detected over Rs 19,000 crore in black money following investigations into global leaks, including HSBC account holders in Switzerland, according to a PTI report on Friday. The PTI report quoted Finance Minister Arun Jaitley as saying that investigations into information put in the public domain by the ICIJ or the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, pertaining to about 700 Indian persons allegedly linked to offshore entities based on no tax or low tax jurisdiction, have led to the detection of more than Rs 11,010 crore of credits in undisclosed foreign accounts.”72 prosecution complaints in 31 such cases have been filed before the criminal courts,” Jaitley informed the Lok Sabha, according to the report. The government constituted a multi-agency group (MAG) in April 2016 to facilitate and expedite investigation in cases of Indian individuals who allegedly have undisclosed foreign assets and whose names were reportedly included in the Panama papers leak.Jaitley said that information on 628 Indian individuals holding bank accounts in HSBC bank in Switzerland was received from the government of France under the Double Taxation Avoidance Convention (DTAC) between India and France.”As a result of the systematic investigation in these cases, undisclosed income of about Rs 8,437 crore was brought to tax till May 2017. Besides, concealment penalty of Rs 1,287 crore was levied in 162 cases and 199 criminal prosecution complaints were filed in 84 cases,” Jaitley pointed out.He noted, however, that the information received under the tax treaties can be used for tax purposes and its disclosure is governed by the confidentiality provisions of such treaties.Replying to a query, whether the government has made any assessment of black money stashed away by Indians in foreign countries, Jaitley said there is no official estimation of that, the PTI report said. However, he said, the government had commissioned a study on estimation of unaccounted income and wealth inside and outside the country to be conducted by NIPFP, NIFM, and NCAER.”The reports of these institutions and the government’s response to the findings in the reports would be placed before the Standing Committee on Finance shortly,” he added.last_img read more

Photo: AFPA gunman on Tuesday shot dead two police officers with their own weapons before killing a bystander in a brazen suspected terror attack in Belgium, briefly taking a hostage at a school before being killed by police. The carnage in the gritty eastern industrial city of Liege began around 10:30am (0830 GMT) when the attacker armed with a knife stabbed two police officers repeatedly before using their own firearms to kill them, prosecutors said.Federal prosecutors said they had launched a terrorist investigation into the incident, which comes with Belgium on high alert after a string of attacks including twin suicide bombings in Brussels in 2016 claimed by the Islamic State group.”Armed with a knife, the suspect followed and attacked two police officers, and used their own firearms to kill them,” prosecutor Philippe Dulieu told a news conference.”He continued on foot, attacking a parked vehicle where he opened fire on a 22-year-old man in the passenger seat. The young man died.”He then continued and entered the Leonie de Waha school. He took a woman working there as hostage. Police intervened, he came out firing on the police officers, wounding several before he was killed.”Eric Van Der Sypt, spokesman for the Belgian federal prosecutor’s office, told AFP there were “elements that point in the direction that this is a terrorist act”.According to Belgian broadcaster RTBF, the shooter was released from prison on Monday and was only known for minor infractions with no known links to extremism.Prime minister Charles Michel condemned what he called “cowardly and blind violence”.”All our support for the victims and their loved ones. We are following the situation with the security services and the crisis centre,” Michel tweeted.- ‘Horrible act’ -Belgian interior minister Jan Jambon said Belgium’s Federal Crisis Centre was monitoring the situation.”Our thoughts are with the victims of this horrible act. We are in the process of establishing an overview of exactly what happened,” Jambon wrote on Twitter.A major security cordon was set up around the area, while panicked parents came to collect their children from the school complex. The governor of Liege province said all the children and staff were safe and unhurt.”All the children are fine, those of the primary and kindergarten saw nothing, they were evacuated through the back of the school,” Julie Fernandez, mother of a 7-year-old child at the school, told AFP.”They were cared for by staff and psychologists and high school students were cared for in a nearby park,” added Fernandez, who is also an MP.Belgium has been on high alert since the smashing of a terror cell in the town of Verviers in January 2015 that was planning an attack on police. The cell also had links to Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the mastermind of the November 2015 Islamic State attacks on Paris that killed 130 people.Belgium further raised its terror alert level after the Paris attack and placed the capital Brussels on lockdown for a week. The country was then hit by its own IS suicide attacks on Brussels airport and a metro station, which killed 32 people in 2016.In August 2016, a machete-wielding man shouting “Allahu Akbar” (God is greatest) attacked two policewomen in the industrial town of Charleroi before being shot dead. The country’s law enforcement agencies and intelligence services came under intense scrutiny for apparently missing a series of leads after the Paris attacks that could have led to the Brussels bombers.last_img read more
